These 10 generations form the lineage of the St.Germain family name in Canada and USA. Little is known about Jean Gaussin (a.k.a Gaucin, Gosselin, etc). There are several contradictory references to his birthplace in France. I think it's most likely that he came from the small town called Saint-Germain-de-la-Rivière in Southern France, arriving in Quebec as a soldier. At the time, it was common for men to take on "dit" names, which were a cross between a nom de guerre and a nickname. Some men chose names that represented some quality they admired; others chose place names from France; others chose religious names. Saint-Germain could've been a religious name, but it also seems to have been Jean Gaussin's hometown.
At any rate, over several generations in Canada, the men dropped the "Gaussin" and the "dit" parts, and we've been the St.Germain family for the next 200 years.
